Section 3.1 Standard Operating Procedures

The objective of Standard Operating Procedures or SOPs is to ensure everyone in or under the company are operating and using the same standard procedures. The SOP is a meticulously documented, step-by-step set of guidelines used to ensure safety, consistency, and efficiency in flight and ground operations.

Core Purposes of Aviation SOPs

  • Standardization: Ensure every crew member performs tasks in a predictable, uniform way regardless of individual experience.
  • Error Reduction: Minimize human error during complex or high-pressure situations.
  • Crew Coordination: Define clear task-sharing, callouts, and communication rules between the Pilot Flying (PF) and VO/Ground crew
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meet mandatory safety standards established by authorities like the ICAO or Transport Canada

SOPs vs. Checklists

An SOP defines the entire comprehensive method and rationale for conducting an operation, whereas a checklist is a short, actionable tool used to verify that essential safety-critical steps have been completed.

Transport Canada outlines in great detail what should be included in a drone company’s SOPs and even provides templates.
